With the enthusiastic support of six important partner institutions, Hannover Medical School (MHH) in 2006 has established a Cluster of Excellence in the area of Regenerative Biology and Reconstructive Therapies, acronym REBIRTH. The goal of the Excellence Initiative is to strengthen cutting-edge research in Germany and to improve its international competitiveness. Outstanding projects are funded as Clusters of Excellence which focus the research potential at university locations in Germany and, hence, strengthen their international visibility.

Since 2006, the ‘Germany – Land of Ideas’ initiative has run the “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” contest, whose patron is Germany’s Federal President Horst Köhler. On 1 November 2010, REBIRTH will open its doors for the public at large. More information can be found at here. | You can also download the press release here. | |

The REBIRTH research video entitled ‘Regeneration von Organen anregen’ (‘Stimulating organ regeneration’) is available for viewing on the excellence initiative’s video portal.
As of mid-January 2009, German Research Foundation (DFG)-supported institutions are being presented on a multimedia portal, viewable at http://www.excellence-initiative.com/hannover-regenerative-biology-reconstructive-therapy, each with a short clip, up-to-date documentation, background information and links to those institutions as well as to the competition itself. One more institution will be added each week, so that eventually all 85 DFG-supported graduate colleges, excellence clusters, and initiatives for the future (‘Zukunftskonzepte’) will be represented.
Definitely worth a look!

The Hans Borst Center for Heart and Stem Cell Research was funded with 13.5 million euros by the Braukmann-WittenbergHeart Foundation. This building is the central REBIRTH location. Since May 2008 13 of 40 REBIRTH working groups are based in the new building. Clinical units including BMT and teaching facilities are nearby, as well as other core facilitites of the campus. ITEM, CECI (the joint venture of HZI and MHH focusing on infection research) and the GMP company Cytonet are within walking distance.
