Unit 5 - RG Cell Surgery (belongs to AG 27 - W2 Biophotonics)

Objectives

The aims of the RG Cell Surgery and the professorship "Biophotonics" are the study and development of optical tools for the manipulation of cells and cellular functions. Optical techniques allow the achievement of highly localized effects within cells, which can be simultaneously used for high resolution imaging.

Research Focus

The aims of the RG Cell Surgery and the professorship "Biophotonics" are the study and development of optical tools for imaging and manipulation of biological structures. Using nonlinear imaging modalities, like multiphoton microscopy and second- or third-harmonic generation, tissue slices up to 1 mm-thickness can be imaged non-invasively. For three-dimensional visualization of centimeter-sized biological objects, tomographic methods are developed and evaluated.  By using further nonlinear effects, precise manipulation or ablation of cells or tissue structures can be achieved, for example for cell enucleation or cell transfection. To enable high-throughput processing, plasmonic effects in noble nanoparticles, such as gold nanoparticles (GNP) or gold nanorods, are being studied as potential markers for higher contrast or selective therapy.
