An exciting prospect: patients cured by their own cells?

Altering patients’ own cells so they can replace defective or absent cells – researchers at Hannover Medical School (MHH) have moved a step closer to achieving this. The scientists are investigating hereditary pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (herPAP), a rare, life-threatening condition in which the scavenger cells (macrophages) in the lungs are defective. To replace them, the researchers produced highly potent cells known as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) from mature human cells. These cells were matured into scavenger cells in the laboratory and then transplanted into the lungs of diseased mice. The immune system of these mice had been modified so that it resembled that of humans and helped the cells become implanted in the lung. And this proved a resounding success: the cells adapted to the special environment of the lung, the condition improved, and no significant side effects occurred. The findings were published in the prestigious American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
