Biosketch:

A. Haverich (*1953), is head of the Department of Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery at the MHH and coordinator of the REBIRTH Cluster of Excellence. His major research interests are in heart and lung surgery, lung transplantation, organ regeneration and repair, and tissue engineering. He was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 1995, which resulted in the foundation of the Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs (LEBAO). Professor Haverich and his team have pioneered a number of groundbreaking developments in the field of cardiothoracic and transplantation surgery and regenerative medicine, including a biological heart valve which can grow with the recipient patient, which is currently being tested in two international clinical studies. Current research focuses on the development of implantable biological organs, biofunctionalised implants, bioprinting of organs and microvessel dysfunction.
