Vascular Remodelling and Regeneration


Acute or chronic vascular injury and inflammation results in a dysfunction and de-differentiation of endothelial- and smooth muscle cells. As a consequence, the imbalance of an impaired endothelial regenerative capacity on the one hand and an inadequate proliferation and secretory activity of smooth muscle cells on the other hand, results in pathologic vascular remodeling and vessel narrowing. 

Our aim is to elucidate the intracellular signalling mechanisms that trigger the dedifferentiation of endothelial- and smooth muscle cells. In this context, the group focusses especially on signaling molecules and transcription factors that regulate epigenetic processes and thus control the differentiation of vascular cells like Forkhead box O (FoxO-) transcription factors and sirtuins. Moreover, microRNAs that regulate these signalling pathways are investigated. 

The aim of these projects is to develop novel strategies for the treatment of atherosclerosis or in-stent restenosis as well as for the improvement of therapeutic angiogenesis. 

Research Focus

The main research interest and expertise of the group is in the field of vascular biology and medicine.  
The group especially focuses on the signaltransduction processes in vascular cells (smooth muscle- and endothelial cells) that modulate vascular disease processes like atherosclerosis, restenosis and pulmonary hypertension. Moreover, the underlying mechanisms of impaired endothelial function, namely re-endothelialization and angiogenesis are in the focus of current projects. By combining up to date molecular- and cell biology techniques with different animal models and clinical approaches, the group aims to develop novel translational approaches and strategies for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of these vascular diseases. 
Embedded in the sizzling and stimulating surrounding of the Cluster of Excellence REBIRTH and an international DFG research training group as well as in close interaction and collaboration with local, national and international experts, the team works in the field of cutting edge research regarding vascular remodeling- and regenerative processes.
